April 16, 1942: Employing ‘scorched earth’ tactics, British forces set fire to oil fields at Yenangyaung, Burma, ahead of advancing Japanes

April 17, 1942: End of Bataan Death March in the Philippines where thousands of American and Filipino prisoners die at the hands of the Japanese

April 18, 1942: American bomber crews under command of Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle, left front, raid Tokyo and other Japanese cities in surprise attack launched from aircraft carrier USS Hornet in the Pacific

April 19, 1942: After bombing Tokyo and other cities, most Doolittle raiders crash land in China. Eight aviators fall into Japanese hands, and three of them are later executed

April 20, 1942: Japanese forces complete conquest of Philippine island of Panay, although scattered Filipino forces remain active in remote mountain areas

April 21, 1942: Japanese troops in pursuit of Chinese 6th Army at Hopong, Burma

April 22, 1942: Japanese forces in Java begin detaining Dutch civil servants. Photo shows earlier detention of Dutch military personnel
