July 3, 1941: Japan says Chinese army has lost over 40,000 soldiers during two months of fighting in Shanxi and Henan provinces
July 4, 1941: China says it is not seeing any signs that the Japanese army is moving troops to the north in preparation of attack on Soviet Union
July 5, 1941: Japan says 109,250 of its soldiers have lost their lives in the preceding four years of war, mostly in China but also in conflicts with the Soviet Union
July 6, 1941: In message to overseas Chinese on the ongoing war with Japan, China’s First Lady Song Meiling says “we must bot and shall not fail those who have borne the heaviest blows”
July 7, 1941: 1st Marine Aircraft Wing is activated at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia
July 8, 1941: Japan tells the US government that it does not plan to join Germany in the attack on the Soviet Union
July 9, 1941: Japanese troops encounter unexpected resistance from conventional Chinese troops in southeastern Fujian province
